The Motto inscribed above the library entrance reads: ‘Mens cujusque is est quisque’
Meaning: ‘The mind is the man,” or, ‘As each person’s mind is, so is the person,’ or, ‘Each person is defined by their mind.’

The 17th-century naval administrator and diarist, Samuel Pepys, used this Latin maxim on his bookplates and had it displayed here at Magdalene College, Cambridge, where his historic library is kept.
