… A King of castles? 

A King of armies? 

A King of riches?

A King of possessions?

Is that being a King to you? 

Is that being Kingly? 

Is that being Mighty? 

For many Kings there have been, and many Kings there are, and many Kings there will yet be.

And they too will wear the crown of such Kings, and rule over such things?

But just as soon, they will be gone. 

Gone. 

And their armies, and their castles, and and their riches, and their possessions, may yet remain. Yes.

But they, they shall not. 

And not a one can say that they were a King over the shadows of time. 

And they will be gone. 

Gone.

The Latin Inscription on the sundial, mounted to the east of the south door of King’s College Chapel, reads: 

Ut hora sic fugit vita.

As an hour, so flies life.
(or, Life flies away like an hour.)
